Dog or Cat?

When people ask me, “are you a cat person or a dog person?”, I always have to stop for a moment and think about it. I am definitely an animal person, so I love all animals – even rats. I actually think rats are kind of cute in a toothy sort of way. But as for dogs and cats and whether I’m one or the other, it is quite a difficult question to answer.\r\nWhat are the qualities of cats and dogs? Well, dogs are known to be champions of loyalty. At least that’s what everyone believes, and I guess there is a lot of truth to that. When the master comes home from a hard day’s work, there to greet the master is almost always dog, tongue out and wagging tail. To this I give dog a point. And when the master calls for dog, dog without reservation comes running to his caller. Another point.\r\nCats, on the other hand, are independent. Rarely, if ever, is cat waiting at the door to greet the master. And if cat should be waiting, it’s because cat is hungry and demands to be fed. To this, I cannot give cat a point. However, I admire the independence of cat. If I call for cat, and cat doesn’t feel like coming, cat does not come. Cat knows I will feed him anyway. Point for cat.\r\nBoth are cute and cuddly, especially when they were just puppy and kitten. Often when laying on the couch, dog will come to put his chin on the master’s chest with eyes that say, “I can see you need some love from me, so here is my head for you to pet.” Point for dog.\r\nCat will come from some perch on high while the master is laying on the couch and softly rest upon the master’s chest. To this, the master might open his eyes to the sound of cat purring as if to say, “Go back to sleep, master. Let me sing you a lullaby.” Point for cat.\r\nIt’s easy to see that a choice between the two cannot be made by me. And even though dog gained an extra point, I think it safe to say I am both a cat person and a dog person. What are you?\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nby Justin A. Violette
